Manning Landcare manages a number of key projects in the local area.

Conservation Volunteers Project

Manning & Great Lakes Landcare Committees in conjunction with Conservation Volunteers Australia successfully applied for funds through the Partnerships Program from Hunter Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority. A trained supervisor works with the volunteers and landholders. Some of the volunteers are local and some are overseas visitors that want the opportunity to work on regeneration projects in our area. For landholders the program provides some much needed help with weeding and planting on riparian sites. The team will be working on locations in Wherrol Flat, Mid Manning area and a site in Nabiac. The program will run until the end of May 2008.

Indian Myna Bird Project

The we have recently been allocated funding to further develop the Indian Myna Bird Project for the mid north coast. More information on this project is available online at: www.indianmyna.org.

National Landcare Program (NLP)

Local Issues, Local Farmers, Local Solutions: Better Coastal Management

The objective of this project is to run a survey throughout the Manning Catchment to identify local needs relating to on-farm production and the environment. To set up a Farmer Producer Network Committee to determine more productive and sustainable management strategies for grazing on the coast.

A co-ordinator jointly managed by Manning Landcare and Karuah Great Lakes Landcare will assist landholders with the setting up of trials and demonstrations. Field days will be held to display results.

Sustainable Grazing

This three year project is assisting farmers to conduct soil testing, run trials and showcase the results to others.

Farm Forestry Courses

Australian Master Tree Growers Course is a program delivered in part by the Rowan Reid from The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Land and Food Resources. Participants in this very practical course learn all aspects of managing trees for timber production, measuring timber quantities and marketing.

Coombell Park Farm Forestry to be held at Wotton on the 25 – 27th of June. An opportunity to gain practical skills in all aspects of managing native regrowth, the economics of selling timber, measuring what timber you have growing in the paddock and value adding. A visit a local sawmill is included.

Setting Targets for Change

This is a project which a consultant works with Dairy farmers identifying targets to change which gives them environmental and productive results.

Environmental Trust

Environmental Trust

Manning Landcare successfully applied for funds through the New South Wales Environmental Trust for a regeneration project on Cedar Party Creek, Wingham. The project focuses on removing environmental weeds and enhancing existing vegetation. This project commenced in 2006 and will continue over three years.

Manning Landcare sort the support of residents with land adjoining the creek, Wingham Bowling Club, Wingham Advancement Group and Wingham Rotary. Bush regenerators have completed the primary weeding and planting in 2006. They and volunteers will to remove germinating weed seedlings and plant more trees as the project progresses.

Community Water Grants

The Australian Government Water Fund provides funding to projects with demonstrated water saving benefits. This project assisted two landholders in the Manning area to establish off creek watering systems and fence off waterways to exclude stock access.

 

Envirofund Round 8

Envirofund Logo

Manning Landcare sourced funds to enable four farmers in the Mount George area to set up 2 off creek watering systems, fence off 8.5km of river/creek and protect 91 hectares of vegetation.

Community Support Worker

The Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA) funds the Community Support Officer for Manning Landcare.
